Abstract:

This article explores managerial innovation (MI) in the context of family businesses, a type of innovation that is still little studied despite its importance for the sustainability and competitiveness of this form of enterprise. A critical review of the existing literature is carried out to identify gaps in current research on MI, which has mainly focused on large non-family firms, particularly neglecting the specific characteristics of small and medium-sized family businesses (SMEs). The aim of this paper is to propose specific avenues of research to deepen our knowledge of the unique dynamics of MI in family-owned SMEs. It thus highlights the need to reposition MI research by integrating the unique particularities of family SMEs, while proposing promising lines of research.
